50 years of research at Loria

This autumn, the Loria is celebrating 50 years of computer science research in Lorraine.

A bit of history…

The year 1976 saw the creation of the first research laboratory in Lorraine.

The CRIN ( Centre de Recherche en Informatique de Nancy ) — which would later become Loria — marked the official birth of structured computer science research in the region.

However, it all began earlier, in the 1950s. Thanks to the foresight and entrepreneurial spirit of Jean Legras—a professor of rational mechanics and numerical analysis—and the subsequent interest shown by mathematics professor Claude Pair, Nancy became a pioneer in university-level computer science. Computer science in Nancy began in 1957, when Jean Legras recognized the immense potential of what was then still known as « automatic computing. »

In the early 1970s, the development of computer science across Nancy’s three new universities led to the creation of faculty-researcher positions; these individuals came together within the CRIN, a laboratory shared by the three universities.

In 1973, Jean-Paul Haton—a professor at Nancy’s Henri Poincaré University and the first computer scientist at the IUF—introduced a new research area: speech recognition. This enabled the CRIN—comprising around a hundred researchers organized into ten teams—to structure itself around two main pillars: Software Theory and Techniques (TTL) and Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence (RFIA). In 1976, the CNRS officially recognized the CRIN as an associated laboratory.

Loria’s 50th-anniversary celebration will take place on Thursday, September 24th.
All the laboratory’s members will meet in the amphitheater starting at 1:30 PM to celebrate five decades of computer science research together!
On the agenda:
In the morning, internal tours of our platforms — the Creativ’Lab and the High-Security Laboratory — are scheduled! (Dedicated to Loria’s members.)

Early afternoon: discover research from colleagues across all departments through talks accessible to everyone.
  • Sophie Tourret – Mosel-Veridis team.
  • Thibault Cholez – Resist team.
  • Romain Serizel – Multispeech team.
  • Jérémy Fix – Biscuit team.
  • Guillaume Moroz – Gamble team.
5:00 PM: Official speeches.
5:45 PM: Cocktail reception, scientific demonstrations, and festive activities in Hall C.
