Abstract:

Opinion Dynamics: Bounded Confidence and Polarization in Networks

Opinion dynamics has gained a lot of attention in various scientific fields for over 60 years. An important and widely investigated family of the models of opinion dynamics is based on the assumption of bounded confidence. The basic idea, originally proposed by Hegselmann and Krauze, captures the homophily behavior and is very simple: individuals in a social network can only be influenced by peers with similar-enough opinions. In other words, individuals only listen to those with opinion not farther away than a given threshold from their own opinion.

In this talk, I will present a short overview of bounded confidence opinion dynamics models and some extensions of this setting. I will focus on the effect of bounded confidence on polarization in the network, the formation of clusters and their number, as well as its non-monotonicity with respect to the value of the threshold. I will briefly discuss our model of the joint evolution of opinions and social relationships, where the dynamics are based on bounded confidence. This framework naturally gives raise to strong diversity, i.e., the persistence of heterogeneous opinions in connected societies, a phenomenon that many existing models fail to capture. The results allow to frame the problem of the design of public debates in a formal setting.

Biography:
Agnieszka RUSINOWSKA is a CNRS Research Professor (Directrice de Recherche) at Centre d’Economie de la Sorbonne (CES – CNRS & University Paris 1). She is a microeconomic theorist working on network theory (in particular, opinion dynamics, influence, strategic network formation) and game theory (in particular, cooperative games, coalition formation, voting, bargaining). She is also interested in experimental economics. After obtaining a Ph.D. degree from Warsaw School of Economics in 2000, Agnieszka worked in the Netherlands for 7 years, first as a Marie Curie fellow and a postdoctoral researcher at Tilburg University, and then as a postdoctoral researcher and Assistant Professor at Radboud University in Nijmegen. She joined CNRS in 2007, the laboratory GATE in Lyon, where she defended her HDR from University Lyon 2 in 2008, and then moved to CES in 2010.
