DESCRIPTION:Daniel Augot (Inria Saclay et École polytechnique) sera la prochain orateur du séminaire SSL\, mardi 12 juin à 13h30 en salle A008. \nTitre : Bitcoin\, cryptomonnaies\, blockchains: la folie\, le pourquoi de la folie\, et la science. \nRésumé : \nLe « buzz »\, « hype »\, ou tout simplement l’excitation\, autour des cryptomonnaies attend des sommets invraisemblables\, souvent ridicules. On peut se demander de quoi il retourne. Après\, en guise d’introduction\, avoir donné des exemples de cette folie Bitcoin (pour rire un peu)\, je rentrerai dans le cœur des protocoles historiques de blockchain\, la preuve de travail\, inventée dans le cadre de Bitcoin\, ce qui permet de comprendre pourquoi ces protocoles sont considérés comme « décentralisés »\, une propriété tant vantée dans le monde des cryptomonnaies. On verra ensuite les variantes intuitives qui peuvent assez naturellement se présenter\, et que la recherche scientifique a pris le train très en retard\, sur un sujet qui semble nouveau\, à la rencontre de l’algorithmique distribuée et de la cryptographie. Enfin\, je présenterai les questions de recherche qui se posent\, avec toutefois une orientation plus cryptographique que distribuée.

DESCRIPTION:Les Journées Nationales de la Robotique Humanoïde 2018 se dérouleront au LORIA les 14 et 15 juin 2018. \nCes journées ont pour objectif de réunir les communautés nationales de la recherche en robotique et de l’industrie autour du domaine de la Robotique Humanoïde. \nProgramme : \nComme pour les années précédentes\, la programmation de ces Journées seront constituées par des interventions de chercheurs invités (60 minutes) et des présentations orales sélectionnées parmi les contributions soumises (20-30 minutes). Une session de posters permanente assurera l’échange entre les participants\, les jeunes chercheurs et doctorants tout au long de la conférence. DESCRIPTION:Le mardi 19 juin à 13h30 aura lieu le Colloquium du Loria avec Marc Sciamanna\, professeur associé à CentraleSupélec Metz. \nSon exposé s’intitule “Photonique ou l’intelligence de la matière”. \nRésumé : \nLe mot « photonique » a été introduit après la découverte du photon pour désigner la science et les technologies qui utilisent la lumière. Technologie clé de notre quotidien\, la photonique a permis le développement de sources alternatives d’énergie électrique\, de l’imagerie et du diagnostic médical\, de l’exploration de l’espace\, des télécommunications et du multimédia\, etc.\nLa lumière est également fascinante dans son interaction avec la matière. Cette interaction permet de modifier les propriétés optiques de la matière et d’observer des formes complexes de propagation lumière comme des patterns (structures auto-organisées de lumière)\, des structures localisées de type solitons\, des vortex\, des faisceaux de lumière accélérants\, etc. De nombreux systèmes qui génèrent et manipulent la lumière sont par ailleurs des systèmes fortement non-linéaires qui présentent pour beaucoup des dynamiques complexes\, voire chaotiques. Ces propriétés qui mettent en évidence une forme de complexité de la lumière sont considérées par beaucoup comme essentielles pour développer une nouvelle forme d’intelligence\, non pas artificielle ou logicielle\, mais matérielle. Cette intelligence permet de sécuriser l’information\, d’opérer des calculs complexes et de comprendre et simuler de nombreux phénomènes présents dans la Nature. \nLes personnes extérieures au laboratoire doivent s’inscrire par e-mail avant le jeudi 14 juin.

DESCRIPTION:Note this forthcoming D4 seminar on Wednesday\, June 20 at 2pm\, room A008. \nIt will be given by Maël Primet (Snips). \nTitle :\nPresenting Snips: a Platform for Natural Language Understanding and Speech Recognition on the edge \nAbstract :\nSnips is building a Voice AI platform running 100% on embedded devices\, comprising of a wake-word detector\, an automated speech recognizer\, and natural language understanding. As microprocessors become cheaper and more powerful\, moving computations to the edge provides many advantages: privacy-by-design\, 100% availability\, lower costs\, higher reactivity. But this also requires tradeoffs in terms of accuracy\, as larger models are not able to run on commodity chips. This talk will present some aspects of the Snips platform and tradeoffs which have been made to guarantee high accuracy while reducing model sizes.

DESCRIPTION:Note this forthcoming D4 seminar on Tuesday\, June 26 at 10am\, room A008. \nIt will be given by Edward L. Keenan (Department of Linguistics\, UCLA). \nTitle :\nIndividuals Explained Away \nAbstract :\nAs a linguist wading into philosophical waters I begin with two semantic observations concerning some intensional common nouns and their modifiers. I provide them with a minimal semantic analysis whose justification is twofold. One\, it is linguistically enlightening: it points out some semantic generalizations about English and provides a formally explicit analysis of the relevant entailment patterns. Two\, it generalizes standard extensional model theory without adding novel entities such as possible worlds or propositions. Such entities may facilitate the semantic analysis of modal adverbs and propositional attitude verbs\, but are not needed for the intensional expressions we study here. Our analysis is explanatory in that it characterizes what we are trying to understand only using notions we already understand\, not novel ones we don’t. Our analysis may also have some consequences for Direct Reference Theory (see Almog 2012\, Bianchi 2012\, Kaplan 1989\, Napoli 1995\, Wettstein 2004). Among them is that it eliminates from our naive ontology a universe of objects we think of singular terms as denoting and unbound pronouns and individual variables in logic as ranging over. It also establishes some boundary points limiting the purview of Direct Reference Theory. And\, if nothing else\, it may serve a “bad example” function – “Just look at what happens if you do not adopt a direct reference stance”. As well\, our use of judgments of entailment is more at home in a Fregean setting than a Direct Reference one (Capuano 2012).

DESCRIPTION:Pierre Parrend (Plate-forme BICS\, Laboratoire ICube\, ECAM-Strasbourg-Europe) sera le prochain orateur du séminaire SSL\, mardi 26 juin à 13h en salle Bob\, B013. \nTitre :\nHealth Optimisation through 4P Ecosystems: the HOPE suite for medical data security. \nRésumé :\nHOPE (Health Optimisation through 4P Ecosystems) is a software suite for managing complex patient cohorts in a secure manner. It aims at supporting integration\, analysis\, exploitation and protection of medical data in distributed ecosystems. HOPE integrates 36 cohorts\, from massive ones like Jiva Cohort with 500.000 patients of traditional medicine from India\, to tiny cohorts of patients with extremely rare diseases\, like Genida cohorts that entail from 2 to 40 people. HOPE provides tools for connecting together patients and medical practitioners (Genida)\, statistical analysis of medical data (OptimR)\, security control (Meerkat)\, and secure distributed data safeguard (RADAR). HOPE is part of the BICS Platform: Bio-statistics\, Informatics and Complex Systems\, of ICube Laboratory at University of Strasbourg\, which aims at providing algorithmic solutions for understanding and steering natural as well as artificial complex systems.
