DESCRIPTION:En raison de la situation sanitaire actuelle\, la conférence aura lieu en virtuel. \nUn événement qui réunit chaque année une centaine d’experts français du domaine\, dont la moitié sont des doctorants travaillant sur le sujet. C’est donc une belle opportunité de rencontrer et recruter de jeunes talents\, de faire connaitre vos activités et de nouer des partenariats ! \nCes rencontres ont lieu chaque année depuis le milieu des années 1990. La première édition des journées appelées « AFIG » a eu lieu à Toulouse en 1994. Chaque année\, un laboratoire se propose pour les organiser dans sa ville. \nLe domaine de l’informatique graphique recoupe de nombreuses thématiques (par exemple\, modélisation 3D et traitement géométriques\, traitement d’images\, affichage 3D (temps réel\, visualisation\, réaliste)\, vision par ordinateur\, animation et simulation numérique d’objets en interactions) mais aussi de nombreuses compétences difficiles à trouver ailleurs (e.g. programmation parallèle (GPU\, OpenGL\, Cuda/OpenCL)\, C/C++ haute performance\, structures de données spatiales\, manipulation de données volumiques\, optimisation numérique sur géométries). \nCette année\, nous apportons une nouveauté au programme : nous invitons des industriels ! \nPlus d’informations sur jfig2020.sciencesconf.org.

DESCRIPTION:Le prochain séminaire SSL sera donné par Emmanuel Thomé\, de l’équipe CARAMBA le jeudi 12 mars\, à 13h30\, en salle A008. \nTitre : Large-scale computational records for public-key cryptography \nRésumé :\nJoint work with Fabrice Boudot\, Pierrick Gaudry\, Aurore Guillevic\, Nadia Heninger\, Paul Zimmermann. \nIn December 2019 and February 2020\, we completed several record computations related to hard problems in public-key cryptography: we factored a 240-digit RSA modulus\, we computed discrete logarithms modulo a 240-digit prime\, and while we were at it\, we also factored a 250-digit RSA modulus. Such records provide very important data points for the assessment of the computational hardness of the integer factorization (IF) and finite field discrete logarithm (DL) problems. These problems underpin the largest part of public-key cryptography that is currently in use. Previous records date back to 2016 (for DL) and 2009 (for IF). \nThis talk reports on how these computations were performed\, and on how we chose parameters for the Number Field Sieve algorithm in order to minimize the running time. We also give some data on the scalability of our approach\, and how it required harnessing a formidable computing power\, with thousands of CPU cores from several facilities\, working in parallel over several months. We also show that our work goes well beyond improving on previous records by using a lot of hardware: even if we had used identical hardware\, our larger computation would have been faster than the smaller\, previous record (for DL).

DESCRIPTION:Le prochain séminaire sera un peu particulier puisqu’il s’agira de la projection de l’exposé invité donné en septembre par Adi Shamir dans le cadre de la conférence Esorics 2019. \nThe European Symposium on Research in Computer Security \nLa projection aura lieu le jeudi 6 février\, à 13h30\, dans l’amphithéâtre du Loria. \nTitre : The Insecurity of Machine Learning: Problems and Solutions \nAbstract : The development of deep neural networks in the last decade had revolutionized machine learning and led to major improvements in the precision with which we can perform many computational tasks. However\, the discovery five years ago of adversarial examples in which tiny changes in the input can fool well trained neural networks makes it difficult to trust such results when the input can be manipulated by an adversary. \nThis problem has many applications and implications in object recognition\, autonomous driving\, cyber security\, etc\, but it is still far from being understood. In particular\, there had been no convincing explanations why such adversarial examples exist\, and which parameters determine the number of input coordinates one has to change in order to mislead the network. \nIn this talk I will describe a simple mathematical framework which enables us to think about this problem from a fresh perspective\, turning the existence of adversarial examples in deep neural networks from a baffling phenomenon into an unavoidable consequence of the geometry of R^n under the Hamming distance\, which can be quantitatively analyzed.

DESCRIPTION:Title : « Why reductions have to be synchronised in intersection (and union) typed lambda-calculi ? »\nLuigi Liquori\, Inria Sophia-Antipolis\n \n\n\nAbstract:\n\nWe present the ∆-calculus\, an explicitly typed λ-calculus with strong pairs\, projections and explicit type coercions. The calculus can be parametrized with different intersection type theories\, as described in the Barendregt-Dekker-Statman book on λ-calculi with types\, producing a family of ∆-calculi with related intersection typed systems. We show why annotating pure λ-calculus with intersection types is not easy: a classical example is the difficulty to decorate the bound variable of the explicitly typed polymorphic identity λx: ?.x such that the type of the identity is (σ → σ) ∩ (τ → τ ): previous attempts showed that the full power of the intersection type discipline can be easily lost. We show why intersection typed systems need a kind of synchronised reduction to fix the subject reduction theorem. The same problematics also appear when decorating λ-calculus with union-types. Finally\, we show how the ∆-calculus can be raised to a ∆-framework by adding dependent-types as in the Edinburgh Logical Framework.

DESCRIPTION:L’invité du séminaire sera Alexei GRINBAUM\, philosophe et physicien. Chercheur au laboratoire Larsim du CEA-Saclay\, il est spécialiste de l’information quantique. Depuis 2003\, il s’intéresse aux questions éthiques liées aux nouvelles technologies\, notamment aux nanotechnologies\, à l’intelligence artificielle et à la robotique. Il a été coordinateur pour la France de l’Observatoire européen des nanotechnologies et partenaire du projet européen « Recherche et innovation responsables en pratique » (RRI-Practice). Membre du Comité national pilote d’éthique du numérique et de l’IA et de la Commission d’éthique de la recherche en numérique (Cerna)\, il a publié « Mécanique des étreintes » (Encre Marine\, 2014) et « Les robots et le mal » (Desclée de Brouwer\, 2019). \n\nLa valeur éthique du hasard pour les systèmes autonomes\nDes robots domestiques se font délateurs\, des agents conversationnels injurient leurs interlocuteurs. Pire encore : des systèmes informatiques participent aux conflits humains et parfois même les provoquent. Le 18 mars 2018\, un véhicule autonome de la société Uber a tué une femme qui traversait la rue dans une ville de l’Arizona. Ce fut la première mort d’un piéton provoquée par un algorithme.\nQui est responsable ? La réponse à cette question compte parmi les défis les plus urgents à relever dans notre rapport aux technologies numériques. Mais il ne s’agit pas de savoir comment rendre l’intelligence artificielle bienveillante. Il s’agit de faire en sorte qu’elle ne se substitue pas à l’homme en tant qu’agent moral. Seul le recours au hasard\, et ceci dès sa conception\, peut libérer la machine de la responsabilité qu’on veut lui faire porter. \nCe séminaire s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet LUE Open Language and Knowledge for Citizens et vous est proposé par Maël Pégny\, Anna Zielinska et Cyrille Imbert\, nos partenaires des Archives Henri-Poincaré. \n  \n\nWe will welcome Alexei GRINBAUM for a philosophy-informatics seminar on Jan. 28th at 13:30 in LORIA C005. \nAlexei Grinbaum\, Ph.D.\, HDR\, is a physicist and philosopher at LARSIM\, the Philosophy of Science Group at CEA-Saclay near Paris. His main interest is in the foundations of quantum theory. He also writes on the ethical and social aspects of emerging technologies\, including nanotechnology\, synthetic biology\, robotics and artificial intelligence. He was coordinator for France of the « European Observatory of Nanotechnologies » and partner in the project “Responsible Research and Innovation in Practice”. Grinbaum is a member of the French national ethics committee for digital technologies and AI as well as of the French ethics commission for research in information technology (Cerna). His books include « Mécanique des étreintes » (2014) and « Les robots et le mal » (2019). \n\nChance as a value for artificial intelligence\nDeep learning techniques lead to fundamentally non-interpretable decisions made by the machine. Although such choices do not have an explanation\, they impact the users in significant ways. If the ultimate innovator is a machine\, what is the meaning of responsible conduct? I argue in a recent book that the capacity to extract an AI system from human judgment\, by reducing transparency in favor of opacity\, is an essential value in machine ethics. This can be achieved through the use of randomness\, as illustrated with the example of the trolley dilemma. Methodologically\, a comparison of common motives between technological setups and mythological narratives is used to achieve ethical insights. \nThis seminar is part of the LUE project Open Language and Knowledge for Citizens and is initiated by our colleagues Maël Pégny\, Anna Zielinska et Cyrille Imbert\, from the Archives Henri-Poincaré Lab. \n

DESCRIPTION:Seminar by Juan Cortés\, LAAS-CNRS\, Toulouse\, France \nTitle: Several stories about tripeptides: basic components for modeling flexible protein structures \nSummary:\nFrom a mechanical point of view\, fragments of three consecutive amino acid residues (called tripeptides hereafter) are very interesting elements of polypeptide chains. Indeed\, if we consider the bond torsion angles as the main degrees of freedom\, the 6 angles in a tripeptide (3 pairs of phi-psi angles\, neglecting the variation of omega angles) are the minimal number allowing full relative mobility of the two ends of the chain. Besides\, using techniques originating from robotics\, the angle values corresponding to a given pose of the two ends the can be obtained very efficiently. This property has been exploited over decades within conformational sampling methods applied to cyclic peptides or protein loops. It can also be used to enhance conformational sampling of globular proteins using Monte Carlo methods\, or to conceive sophisticated algorithms for modeling large-amplitude conformational transitions. In the first part of my presentation\, I will briefly talk about all these applications. \nTripeptides are also interesting elements from a structural point of view. They are minimalistic fragments capturing local\, sequence-dependent structural preferences of proteins. To encode and to analyze these structural properties\, we have constructed an exhaustive database to tripeptide conformations extracted from experimentally-determined high-resolution protein structures. In the second part of the talk\, I will show how this database can be used to construct realistic models of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and to predict the propensity of some regions to form secondary structure elements. \n

DESCRIPTION:D3 seminar by Gabriele Castellano from Politecnico di Torino. \nTitle: « On the Orchestration of Dynamic Services over Distributed IT Infrastructures » \n  \nAbstract: \nEdge Computing is moving resources toward the network borders\, thus enabling the deployment of a pool of novel applications that benefit from the new distributed infrastructure. However\, due to the heterogeneity of such applications\, specific orchestration strategies need to be adopted for each deployment request. Each application can potentially require different optimization criteria and may prefer particular reactions upon the occurrence of the same event. This work proposes a Service-Defined approach for orchestrating cloud/edge services in a distributed fashion\, where each application can define its own orchestration strategy by means of declarative statements\, which are parsed into a Service-Defined Orchestrator (SDO).\nMoreover\, to coordinate the coexistence of a variety of SDOs on the same infrastructure while preserving the resource assignment optimality\, a fully Distributed Resources AssiGnment and OrchestratioN algorithm (DRAGON) is proposed\, which seeks optimal partitioning of shared resources between different actors.\nThe advantages of the Service-Defined orchestration approach have been evaluated over some representative edge use cases\, and convergence and performance properties of DRAGON have been measured on a prototype implementation\, assessing the benefits compared to conventional orchestration approaches. \n  \nBio: \nGabriele Castellano is a Ph.D. student from Politecnico di Torino\, where he received his Master’s degree in Computer Engineering in 2016. His research interests include service virtualization\, resource orchestration\, distributed optimization\, and software-defined networking. L’orateur sera Ralf Sasse\, de l’ETH Zurich. \n  \nTitle: Seems Legit: Automated Analysis of Subtle Attacks on Protocols that Use Signatures (joint work with Dennis Jackson\, Cas Cremers\, Katriel Cohn-Gordon) \n  \nAbstract: \nThe standard definition of security for digital signatures — existential unforgeability — does not ensure certain properties that protocol designers might expect. For example\, in many modern signature schemes\, one signature may verify against multiple distinct public keys. It is left to protocol designers to ensure that the absence of these properties does not lead to attacks. \nModern automated protocol analysis tools are able to provably exclude large classes of attacks on complex real-world protocols such as TLS 1.3 and 5G. However\, their abstraction of signatures (implicitly) assumes much more than existential unforgeability\, thereby missing several classes of practical attacks. \nWe give a hierarchy of new formal models for signature schemes that captures these subtleties\, and thereby allows us to analyse (often unexpected) behaviours of real-world protocols that were previously out of reach of symbolic analysis. We implement our models in the Tamarin Prover\, yielding the first way to perform these analyses automatically\, and validate them on several case studies. DESCRIPTION:November\, Friday 15th at 10.30 am in room C005\,  Daniele Palossi from the ETH Zurich will give a talk for the in joint D3-D5 seminar. The general topic will be how to run a convolutionnal neural network on a tiny quadcopter (10cm / 27g) using a new kind of CPU architecture (PULP). The exact title of her talk is : PULP-DroNet: Open Source and Open Hardware Artificial Intelligence for Fully Autonomous Navigation on Nano-UAVs\n\nAfter the seminar\, Daniele will try to setup a demo in the “creativ’lab” arena (bat. C).\n\nAbstract: \n\nNano-size unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)\, with few centimeters of diameter and sub-10 Watts of total power budget\, have so far been considered incapable of running sophisticated visual-based autonomous navigation software without external aid from base-stations\, ad-hoc local positioning infrastructure\, and powerful external computation servers.\n\nIn this talk\, we present what is\, to the best of our knowledge\, the first 27g nano-UAV system able to run aboard an end-to-end\, closed-loop visual pipeline for autonomous navigation based on a state-of-the-art deep-learning algorithm\, built upon the open-source Crazyflie 2.0 nano-quadrotor. Our visual navigation engine is enabled by the combination of an ultra-low power computing device (the GAP8 system-on-chip) with a novel methodology for the deployment of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). We enable onboard real-time execution of the DroNet state-of-the-art deep CNN at 6 frame-per-second within 64mW and up to 18fps while still consuming on average just 3.5% of the power envelope of the deployed nano-aircraft. Field experiments demonstrate that the system’s high responsiveness prevents collisions with unexpected dynamic obstacles up to a flight speed of 1.5m/s. In addition\, we also demonstrate the capability of our visual navigation engine of fully autonomous indoor navigation on a 113m previously unseen path.

DESCRIPTION:The next D3 seminar will take place on November 14th\, 13:30-14:30\, room B013. \nTitle : « Optimized resource management in Cognitive Radio Vehicular Networks with soft and hard reliability guarantees » by Nicola Cordeschi (Sapienza University of Rome) \n  \nAbstract: \nIn current vehicular networks\, the communication traffic flows typically generated by safety applications and routed in downlink over the available backbones are of burst-type\, presenting inter-arrival gaps of non-negligible time duration that can be opportunistically exploited by Vehicular Clients (VCs). Recent studies about the mobile computation offloading in real-life cloud-assisted scenarios point out that the usage of WiFi-based traffic offloading in place of 3G-assisted one may reduce the average energy consumption of current smartphones of about 55%. \nIn this seminar\, we focus on primary–secondary user resource-management controllers in cognitive radio (CR) vehicular networks\, for Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) based access scenario\, under hard and soft collision constraints\, where VCs equipped with heterogeneous CR-capabilities and energy budgets (playing the role of secondary users) opportunistically exploit the time and frequency holes of the traffic flow generated by the Service Provider\, and compete for acceding to the serving Roadside Units (RSUs) (the primary user of the Internet backbone)\, through WiFi connections. These bandwidth-demanding applications are expected to have a significant impact on the commercial success of Vehicular Communication (VC) and will contribute to accelerate its implementation and deployment. We will discuss the twofold objective of this kind of networks\, i.e. the joint maximization of the aggregate access goodput of the overall network and the average per-client access rates. One of the problems of conventional approaches is that\, even if they fulfill the collision probability constraints\, they may incur in quite long transients\, where the instantaneous collision-rate is definitely too high\, completely destroying the information. \nWe discuss and compare MAC strategies able to take into account the energy budget\, the parameters and the specific fading phenomena of the vehicular wireless channels in the optimization framework\, so as to self-acquire context information about the currently available bandwidth-energy resources\, and quickly adapt to the mobility-induced changes of the state of the vehicular network\, even in the presence of intermittent Vehicular-to-Infrastructure connectivity. We discuss different families of controllers and derive theoretical results about their hierarchy of performances (throughput-gain\, performance bounds\, and not immediately intuitive situations where the more constrained controllers we propose do not present any optimality gap compared to more standard less reliable approaches). After discussing conditions of applicability and advantages of each subclass\, we give some insight into probabilistic fairness constrained problems\, and controllers exploiting cognitive data-fusion techniques and fully distributed implementations able to adapt to unpredictable and abrupt changes of the network statistics\, without requiring any a priori knowledge of the vehicular traffic patterns. \n  \nBio: \nNicola Cordeschi received the PhD degree in Information and Communication Engineering from the Sapienza University of Rome in 2008. He received the master degree (summa cum laude) in Communication Engineering in 2004. His Ph.D. dissertation was on the adaptive QoS Transport of Multimedia over Wireless Connections via cross layer approaches based on the Calculus of Variations. He was Fellow Researcher with the DIET Dept.\, Sapienza University of Rome for ten years\, and Assistant Professor from 2009 to 2016 giving lectures in the topics of wireless communication\, modulation and digital communication\, signal processing\, coding and information theory. His research activity is focused on wireless communications and deals with the design and optimization of high-performance energy-efficient transmission systems for wireless multimedia applications\, distributed and scalable resource allocation and management for vehicular communications\, medium access control\, multi-antenna systems\, cross-layer optimization via the tools of convex optimization\, game theory and competitive optimality. \n

SUMMARY:D4 Seminar on Self-localization and mapping in dynamic\, acoustic environments
DESCRIPTION:Speaker will be Christine Evers from the Imperial College London. \nSound is used in nature to detect\, identify and track salient events\, to navigate\, and to self-localise. The ability to make sense of acoustic signals is therefore a fundamental prerequisite for robots and autonomous systems. Audition – the ability to hear – excels particularly in scenarios where lighting conditions are poor\, where salient events are outside of the line-of-sight\, and in crowded environments where sensors\, such as LIDAR and RADAR\, are unreliable. However\, due to the challenges affecting acoustic signals\, robot audition has\, to date\, received only limited attention in the research community. \nThis talk focuses on acoustic scene mapping for robot audition in order to address the questions: “What is around me?” and “Where am I?”. The first part of the talk addresses the practical challenges of tracking moving sound sources when microphone arrays are integrated on moving platforms. The second part addresses the self-localization of the moving microphone array in the acoustic scene map when prior knowledge of the array position and orientation are unavailable. SUMMARY:D3 seminar on Low Power Wide Area Networks for the Industrial Internet of Things
DESCRIPTION:The talk will be given by Dr. Dimitrios Zorbas from Tyndall National Institute.\nCurrent Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) protocols suffer from short range links and sometimes long delay due to the multi-hop nature of their topologies. A Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) solution such as the LoRaWAN can resolve those issues\, however\, the ALOHA-style transmission policy of those technologies makes the delivery of a large number of packets by a large number of nodes impossible . To avoid bursts of collisions and expedite data collection\, we propose scheduling of transmissions in time slots. We provide evidence through extensive experiments that time-slotted synchronous LPWAN communications are feasible under different node arrangements. Apart from that\, more and more industrial applications require battery-free solutions that last for ever. To tackle this issue\, energy harvesting techniques such as the wireless power transfer have been proposed to power-up energy constrained IoT devices. During the presentation a number of ideas will be given to achieve the battery-free goal in a dynamic and mobile industrial environment. \n  \nBiography\nDr. Dimitrios Zorbas holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Piraeus in Greece. He has worked as a post doctoral researcher at Inria Lille – Nord Europe and at University of La Rochelle in France. He is currently researcher at Tyndall National Institute after receiving a Marie Curie fellowship. He is author of more than 40 peer-reviewed publications in the area of computer communications\, energy efficiency in networks\, and secure communications. What benefits insisting on reversibility in communication channel models\, equipment and algorithms involved in wireless communications can bring\, and is there an even bigger picture to look at? We will discuss a set of examples and recent results\, as well as a roadmap for the future of this pioneering work. \n\n \nBio: Harun Šiljak obtained his BoE and MoE degrees in control engineering from the University of Sarajevo in 2010 and 2012\, respectively\, and his PhD in electrical engineering from International Burch University Sarajevo in 2015. After working at International Burch University and Bell Labs Ireland\, he joined Trinity College Dublin as an EDGE Marie Curie Fellow in 2017 to work on his project on complexity and control in distributed massive MIMO. Grenoble Alpes / Inria \nProteins are the main effectors of genomic information and are involved in a wide range of physiological and pathological processes. A protein’s\nfunction is known to be influenced or mediated by its interactions with other molecules. These interactions are often associated with changes in\nthe protein’s conformation (i.e.\, its 3D structure). Studying this structure-function relationship requires gathering information about a\nprotein’s conformational space. While experimental techniques have enabled the description of numerous molecular structures\, computational\nmethods are required to exhaustively explore the conformational space of proteins. However\, because of the curse of dimensionality\,\nconformational exploration remains a critical challenge in structural biology.\nIn this talk\, I will present three strategies (that can be combined) to mitigate the curse of dimensionality when computationally exploring the\nconformational space of a protein or a molecular complex. The first strategy consists of using coarse-grained conformational sampling\nmethods\, instead of more accurate but more computationally-expensive all-atom simulation methods. The second strategy consists of guiding the\nconformational exploration with experimental data. The third strategy consists of adopting a purely geometric abstraction of the\nconformational exploration problem to enhance the scalability of existing computational methods.

DESCRIPTION:Ahmed Ali from the QCRI (Qatar Computing Research Institute) will give a talk on Friday 20 at 10:00 in room C005.\nHe will present his work on Automatic speech recognition developed on 1200 hours of speech. \nAbstract:  \nDialectal Arabic speech is suffering from a lack of labelled resources and a lack of orthography. There are three main challenges in dialectal Arabic speech recognition: (1) finding labelled dialectal speech\, (2) building robust dialectal speech recognition with limited labelled and (3) evaluating speech recognition for dialects with no standard orthographic rules.\nMy talk is divided into three parts: \n\nThe first section addresses dialect identification using speech data\, and introduces our novel approach in combining acoustic\, lexical and phonetic features using deep learning.\nThe second section presents our effort in the Multi-Genre Broadcast challenges. In the MGB-2\, more than 1\,200 hours lightly supervised speech data has been used for training multi-dialect broadcast system. The MGB-3 and MGB-5 will highlight the effort in building dialectal challenge in the wild\, where limited dialectal multi-general YouTube data has been used for transfer learning.\nThe third part of my talk addresses our effort in evaluating dialectal speech with no standard orthographic rules. Our methods learn from multiple transcribers and align the speech hypothesis to overcome the non-orthographic aspect. We have also automated this process by learning from twitter data different writing and propose a new evaluation metric. Finally\, we tried to estimate the word error rate with no reference transcription using decoding and language features. We show that our word error rate estimation is robust for many scenarios with and without the decoding features.\n\nBiography :  \nAhmed Ali is a Principal Engineer at the Arabic Language Technologies group (ALT) at the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI). His work interests are in the area of speech recognition and natural language processing. Ahmed completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh and BSc at Cairo University. He joined QCRI in 2011.\nPrior to joining QCRI\, Ahmed worked for Nuance in Cambridge\, UK from 2006-2011. Before Nuance\, Ahmed worked for six years at different IBM labs\, including two years at Watson\, USA\, labs. His current research on speech recognition has led to the development of state-of-the-art multi-dialect Arabic speech recognition: QCRI advanced transcription system (QATS). QATS is used by Al-Jazeera to transcribe their online content. DW and BBC have been using QATS. Ahmed’s team has won first place in the worldwide MGB-2 speech recognition competition. He also won the prestigious Qatar Foundation Best Innovation Award in 2018.

DESCRIPTION:Adrien BARTON\, researcher at the Institut de recherche en informatique in Toulouse  will come at Loria for a philosophy-informatics seminar on Sept. 19th at 2pm in LORIA in room A008. \nThis seminar is part of the LUE project Open Language and Knowledge for Citizens and is initiated by our colleagues from the Archives Henri-Poincaré Lab. \nOntology applied to data sharing\n\nApplied ontology is a field at the crossroads of various disciplines\, including computer science and philosophy. It aims to systematically develop general categorizations that promote semantic interoperability of data (that is\, ensuring the preservation of the meaning of data when it is transmitted from one system to another). An applied ontology defines the categories of entities relevant to a field of knowledge\, and sets out formal axioms that clarify the relationships between these entities. \nAn ontology can be represented as a computer file – the OWL (Web Ontology Language) format being frequently used today. The field of biomedical ontologies is particularly active\, with the continued development of a large set of interoperable biomedical ontologies\, the OBO Foundry (http://www.obofoundry.org/). But ontologies are also widely used in many other fields (engineering\, internet of things\, geographic information systems\, environment\, ecology\, etc.). \nI will show how philosophical work on causality or the nature of informational entities can support the development of coherent ontologies\, considering various examples from biomedical ontology. I will briefly present the Quebec PARS3 project for a learning health system\, based on these ontologies\, which aims to support a coupling between care and research activities. \n

SUMMARY:Séminaire SSL : M. Korczynski (LIG - Grenoble) "Internet-wide Measurements for Cybersecurity : The Case of DNS Zone Poisoning"
DESCRIPTION:Current communication networks are increasingly becoming pervasive\, complex\, and ever-evolving due to factors like enormous growth in the number of network users\, continuous appearance of network applications\, increasing amount of data transferred\, and diversity of user behavior. Therefore\, there is a great need for comprehensive Internet-wide measurements for cybersecurity. Critical facts about the Internet security\, such as “Which domain registries are abused by the cybercriminals the most?” or « Which Internet Service Providers do not deploy source IP address filtering\, facilitating massive DDoS attacks? » remain poorly quantified. \nIn this talk\, we will discuss a number of examples of measurement studies of the domain name space. In particular\, we will explore an attack against configuration files of poorly maintained name servers allowing\, for example\, domain hijacking. We refer to this type of attack as to « zone poisoning ». The attack is as simple as sending a single RFC compliant DNS dynamic update packet to a misconfigured server. In the simplest version of an attack\, a miscreant could replace an existing A or MX DNS resource record in a zone file of a server and point the domain name to an IP address under control of an attacker. We will present the global measurement study of the vulnerability. To assess the potential impact of non-secure dynamic updates\, we scanned 290 million domains worldwide and found that among the vulnerable domains are governments\, banks and health care providers\, demonstrating that the threat impacts important services. \nWe have also issued notifications for website owners\, DNS service providers\, and network operators\, suffering from non-secure DNS dynamic updates to assess which mechanisms are more effective at remediating the vulnerability. After the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) some registration information is\, however\, no longer displayed in the public WHOIS data. Therefore\, we also assessed the effectiveness of alternative communication channels and issued notifications to national CERTs. \nVia our study of the zone poisoning attack and subsequent notifications to affected parties and respective intermediaries\, we aimed to improve the security of the global DNS ecosystem and test alternative methods to contact affected parties after the introduction of the GDPR regulation.

DESCRIPTION:Hiroaki Wagatsuma (Kyushu Institute of Technology\, RIKEN) will be at Loria until June 28th. He will give a talk entitled « Brain-inspired robotics: Neural Dynamics for the Body Coordination and Interactions with the Environment » on Wednesday 19 June\, 10:00am in room C005. \nAbstract\nThe first issue that he tackled was the elucidation of the mechanism how different time scales of a behavior and synapses are associated according to the rhythm and he currently extended it to the question of how a rhythm (a specific type of the limit cycle in the system) transits to the other\, dynamically and sophisticatedly\, i.e. a structural design of the trajectory or self-organization of multiple rhythms for a complex function. For example\, a synchronous motion spontaneously appears in communication between persons faced each other and their motions differentiate as time advances because they need to express the own expressions each other. A typical example is an interactive game with motions. For judging or proceeding from a stage to the next stage\, the counterpart with a different motion have to synchronize at some moment\, which is a result to compete and determine which is winner\, or looser. A possible hypothesis is that such a quasi-equilibrium state is emerged from the coupling between the behavioral coordination and neuronal dynamics including the coordination and a conflict in the internal decision-making process. He discussed on the issue in the talk.

SUMMARY:Séminaire SSL : L. Hirschi (INRIA - LORIA) "Security and Privacy of 5G AKA vs. Formal Verification"
DESCRIPTION:Mobile communication networks connect much of the world’s population. The security of every user’s calls\, SMSs\, and mobile data\, depends on the guarantees provided by the Authenticated Key Exchange protocols used. For the next-generation network (5G)\, the 3GPP group has standardized the 5G AKA protocol for this purpose.\nWe first discuss a comprehensive formal model and security analysis of 5G AKA (CCS’18). We extract precise requirements from the 3GPP standards defining 5G and we identify missing security goals. Using the security protocol verification tool Tamarin\, we conduct a full\, systematic\, security evaluation of the model with respect to the 5G security goals. Our evaluation automatically identifies the minimal security assumptions required for each security goal and we find that some critical security goals are not met\, except under additional assumptions missing from the standard. Finally\, we make explicit recommendations with provably secure fixes for the attacks and weaknesses we found.\nWe then discuss a privacy vulnerability we manually found on 5G AKA but that also affects the 3G and 4G versions of AKA (PETS’19). Despite the practical relevance of this new attack\, no prior automated analyses were able to find it. Even a posteriori\, automatically finding the privacy attack and establishing claims about potential fixes are challenging. We discuss why is so and identify some remaining scientific and technical obstacles.

DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, 28th May 2019 at 2pm\nPlace: LORIA\, room A008\nSpeaker: Angeliki Monnier (Université de Lorraine – CREM) \nTitle: Understanding ICT uses as “habitus”? \nAbstract:\nThis presentation will address the uses of information and communication\ntechnologies (ICT)\, particularly social media\, as “habitus”\, inspired by\nPierre Bourdieu’s Field Theory. My thesis draws on an empirical study\,\nconducted on the professional network LinkedIn\, which focused on\ndiscussion groups held by Greek and French expatriates\, respectively.\nMore particularly\, analysis has shown that discussions are not conducted\nin the same way between Greek and French expatriates. For the former\,\nthe question is the image of the country\, tarnished by the economic\ncrisis. For the latter\, it is the direct contact with the Other\, on the\nbackground of the French colonial past\, which colors the discussions.\nMy argument is that the representations and “patterns of thought” that\ndetermine how Greek and French expatriates get involved in a discussion\ngroup within a professional social media are socio-historically\ndetermined and could be associated to distinct habitus. Following Pierre\nBourdieu’s theory\, these divergences could be related to the positions\nthat Greece and France hold within the international migration field.

SUMMARY:Séminaire SSL : D. Aranha "Return of the Insecure Brazilian Voting Machines"
DESCRIPTION:This talk presents a detailed and up-to-date security analysis of the voting software used in the last Brazilian elections by more than 140 million voters. It is mainly based on results obtained in a restricted hacking challenge organized by the Superior Electoral Court (SEC)\, the national electoral authority. During the event\, multiple serious vulnerabilities (hard-coded cryptographic keys and insufficient integrity checks\, among others) were detected in the voting software\, which\, when combined\, compromised the main security properties of the equipment\, namely ballot secrecy and software integrity. We trace the history of the vulnerabilities to a previous security analysis\, providing some perspective about how the system evolved in the past 7 years. As far as we know\, this was the most in-depth compromise of an official large-scale voting system ever performed under such severely restricted conditions. \nJoint work with Pedro Y. S. Barbosa\, Thiago N. C. Cardoso\, Caio Lüders and Paulo Matias. \n\nDiego F. Aranha is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering at Aarhus University. He holds a PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Campinas and has worked as a visiting PhD student for 1 year at the University of Waterloo. His professional experience is in Cryptography and Computer Security\, with a special interest in the efficient implementation of cryptographic algorithms and security analysis of real-world systems. He coordinated two teams of independent researchers capable of detecting and exploring vulnerabilities in the software of the Brazilian voting machines during controlled tests organized by the national electoral authority.\nHe received the Google Latin America Research Award for research on privacy twice\, and the MIT TechReview’s Innovators Under 35 Brazil Award for his work in electronic voting.

DESCRIPTION:Etienne André\,de l’Université Paris 13 fera un exposé le vendredi 3 mai à 14h00 en salle A008 intitulé « Monitoring real-time systems under uncertainty » \nAbstract : \nGiven a log and a specification\, timed pattern matching aims at exhibiting for which start and end dates a specification holds on that log. For example\, « a given action is always followed by another action before a given deadline ». This problem has strong connections with monitoring real-time systems. We address here timed pattern matching in presence of an uncertain specification\, i.e.\, that may contain timing parameters (e.g.\, the deadline can be uncertain or unknown). That is\, we want to know for which start and end dates\, and for what values of the deadline\, this property holds. Or what is the minimum or maximum deadline (together with the corresponding start and end dates) for which this property holds.I  will first give a brief introduction to parametric timed model checking. Then I will report on a framework for timed pattern matching based on parametric timed model checking. In contrast to most parametric timed problems\, the solution is effectively computable\, and we perform experiments using IMITATOR to show the applicability of our approach. \n
