DESCRIPTION:The next NLP seminar\, « Discrete Representation Models for Speech Data: Semantic vs. Acoustic Tokens » organized by Multispeech\, Sémagramme\, and Synalp teams\, will take place at Loria on October 7\, at 10 am\, in room A008. \nSpeaker: Robin San Roman\, Meta AI Paris & Multispeech. \nAbstract: Discrete representation models for audio have emerged as a way to apply natural language processing techniques\, such as language models (LMs)\, to the speech modality. We will discuss two families of representations: semantic tokens and acoustic tokens. Semantic tokens capture the meaning of speech at a high level\, while acoustic tokens represent the raw audio signal. We will examine the pros and cons of each approach for speech representation\, compression\, and modelling. By understanding the strengths and limitations of these representations\, we can develop approaches that bridge the gap between semantic and acoustic representations.

SUMMARY:Data Science for Cybersecurity: An Overview Focused on Networking\, a talk by Michele Nogueira
DESCRIPTION:Michele Nogueira\, Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais will present a seminar entitled « Data Science for Cybersecurity: An Overview Focused on Networking ». It will take place at 10 am\, in room A008. \nAbstract: Cyberattacks persistently pose threats to valuable data\, resulting in time and resource wastage\, and damaging the reputation of companies and institutions worldwide. Even prominent organizations have experienced the severe consequences of cyberattacks\, impacting not only themselves but also their customers\, collaborators\, and society at large. Ransomware such as WannaCry continues to pose a significant threat\, encrypting data and demanding ransom payments in Bitcoin cryptocurrency. Furthermore\, sophisticated versions of Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks\, originating from various Internet-connected devices like IP cameras\, residential gateways\, and baby monitors\, disrupt major Internet platforms and services\, affecting users globally. These examples underscore the increasing power and sophistication of cyberattacks\, highlighting the evolving nature of cybersecurity. In the era of ubiquitous systems\, with an estimated 75 billion connected devices or “smart things” expected by 2025\, the urgency to address these issues is apparent. However\, academia’s role in combating the sophistication of cyberattacks remains a crucial aspect. Can academia effectively anticipate attackers’ next moves to safeguard information assets? How can academia harness the data generated on networks to develop security intelligence and preemptively prevent attacks? This presentation aims to initiate a discussion surrounding these questions\, providing an overview of the related research conducted by Dr. Nogueira’s research team\, along with future directions in these areas. \nBio: Michele Nogueira is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG)\, Brazil. She received her doctorate in Computer Science from the University Pierre et Marie Curie – Sorbonne Université\, France. She was on sabbatical leave at Carnegie Mellon University\, USA (2016-2017). Her research interests include wireless networks\, security\, and dependability. She has worked on providing resilience to self-organized\, cognitive\, and wireless networks through adaptive and opportunistic approaches. Dr. Nogueira was one of the pioneers in addressing survivability issues in self-organized wireless networks\, being the work “A Survey of Survivability in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks” one of her prominent scientific contributions. She has received Academic Scholarships from the Brazilian Government in her undergraduate and graduate years\, and international grants such as the ACM SIGCOMM Geodiversity program. She has served as Associate Technical Editor for the IEEE Communications Magazine. She served as chair for the IEEE ComSoc Internet Technical Committee and is an ACM and IEEE Senior Member.

SUMMARY:«Studying JavaScript Security Through Static Analysis: Detection of Malicious and Vulnerable Code»\, DefMal Webinar with Aurore Fass
DESCRIPTION:JavaScript is a browser scripting language that was designed to create sophisticated and interactive web pages. However\, JavaScript also provides an entry point for an attacker to exploit bugs and vulnerabilities in web pages and browser extensions. In practice\, an attacker can leverage both malicious and vulnerable JavaScript code to compromise the security and privacy of Web users.\nIn this talk\, I will approach these issues by proposing several systems to statically analyze real-world JavaScript code.\nFirst\, I will focus on _malicious JavaScript_. I will briefly introduce static detectors\, which leverage machine learning techniques to detect malicious JavaScript samples. Then\, I will evaluate the robustness of such static detectors in an adversarial setting. In particular\, I will introduce HideNoSeek\, our generic camouflage attack that consists of rewriting malicious JavaScript samples so that they have the same syntactic structure as existing benign scripts.\nFinally\, I will focus on _vulnerable JavaScript_ code from browser extensions. I will present DoubleX\, our open-source static analyzer that detects vulnerable data flows in browser extensions with high precision (89%) and recall (93%).\nThrough this talk\, I aim to raise awareness about the risks posed by malicious and vulnerable JavaScript code\, and to discuss strategies for mitigating such threats. \nSpeaker’s bio:\nAurore Fass is a Tenure-Track Faculty at CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security. She got her Ph.D. from CISPA & Saarland University in 2021. From 2021 to 2023\, she was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University. Aurore’s research broadly focuses on Web Security & Privacy and Web Measurements. Specifically\, she designs practical approaches to protect the security and privacy of Web users. She builds systems to proactively detect malicious JavaScript code and suspicious browser extensions.\nAurore co-chaired the MADWeb 2024 & 2023 workshop\, co-located with NDSS\, and she is ACM CCS 2024 workshop co-chair. DESCRIPTION:Shahin Gelareh\, Maître de conférences à l’université d’Artois\, présentera ses travaux de recherche au laboratoire le vendredi 29 mars à 10h en salle C005. \nTitle : Machine Learning at the Service of Decomposition Techniques in Mixed Integer Programming: A cross docking assignment and scheduling problem\nAbstract: The primary objective of this presentation is to share our experiences and illustrate how two distinct classes of machine learning algorithms can be seamlessly integrated into decomposition frameworks to expedite the solution process’s convergence. We exemplify this through the truck dock assignment and scheduling problem\, an operational issue that requires frequent resolution throughout the day whenever the existing plan is disrupted by unforeseen events. The operational nature of this problem is crucial as the data distribution remains relatively stable over a considerable period\, facilitating the accumulation of ample training data without issues caused by distribution shifts. Our focus is predominantly on two exact methods: Cut-and-Benders and Dantzig-Wolfe. However\, given enough time\, we also demonstrate that the same trained deep learning model can assist in constructing feasible solutions and can be incorporated into a reinforcement learning model to function as a very efficient heuristic. \nRésumé : L’objectif principal de cette présentation est de partager nos expériences et d’illustrer comment deux classes distinctes d’algorithmes d’apprentissage automatique peuvent être intégrées dans des cadres de décomposition pour accélérer la convergence du processus de résolution. Nous exemplifions ceci à travers le problème d’attribution et de planification de quais pour camions\, un problème opérationnel nécessitant une résolution fréquente au cours de la journée\, chaque fois que le plan existant est interrompu par des événements imprévus. La nature opérationnelle de ce problème est essentielle car la distribution des données reste relativement stable sur une période considérable\, facilitant ainsi l’accumulation d’une quantité suffisante de données d’entraînement sans les problèmes causés par les changements de distribution. Notre attention se porte principalement sur deux méthodes exactes : Cut-and-Benders et Dantzig-Wolfe. Cependant\, si le temps nous permet\, nous démontrons également que le même modèle d’apprentissage profond entraîné peut aider à construire des solutions réalisables et peut être intégré dans un modèle d’apprentissage par renforcement pour fonctionner comme une heuristique très efficace.

SUMMARY:D1 Seminar: Compute-Based Rendering across the Board: Efficient Methods for Meshes\, Point Clouds and Radiance Fields
DESCRIPTION:Next D1 Seminar\, entitled « Compute-Based Rendering across the Board: Efficient Methods for Meshes\, Point Clouds and Radiance Fields »\, will take place on March 15 at 10 am\, in room A006. \nAbstract:  \nDr. Kerbl will present his on-going research on compute-based rendering and its use across 3D representations and applications. Modern 3D content\, both synthetic and captured\, contains an unprecedented amount of geometric detail. At the same time\, user appreciation of 3D content demands low-latency feedback loops: processing\, exploring or modifying 3D scenes should be fast\, or—even better—instant. Failure to meet performance targets is often answered by applying more raw compute power to the problem. This policy has led to systematic hardware hoarding\, a rift between « GPU-rich » and « GPU-poor »\, increased reliance on cloud computing and an overall rise in global resource consumption. A more sustainable solution to this challenge lies in the careful design of inherently parallel algorithms\, finding novel data structures and optimal 3D scene representations for specific tasks. One pillar of the research by Dr. Kerbl et al. towards this goal is the use of compute-based rendering: exploiting GPU compute to assist or replace the fixed-function pipeline for image formation. This talk illustrates concrete examples where compute-based rendering achieves or surpasses state-of-the-art results\, given only a fraction of its competitors’ runtime resources. Apart from image formation itself\, this talk will also discuss recent applications in interactive editing and differentiable rendering methods for radiance fields (NeRFshop\, 3D Gaussian Splatting). \nBio:  \nAfter a Bachelor and Master’s degree in information technology\, Dr. Kerbl received his PhD from Graz University of Technology in 2018 for his research on GPU workload scheduling. In 2019\, he briefly joined Epic Games to work on the Nanite Virtual Geometry feature of Unreal Engine 5. This was followed by a postdoc research stay at TU Wien and another at Inria\, Université Côte d’Azur in the GraphDeco group. Currently\, he acts as principal investigator on a project acquired in 2022 for Instant Visualization and Interaction for Point Clouds (IVILPC). Dr. Kerbl has taught multiple courses on the design and programming of modern GPU hardware at three Austrian universities and has (co-)supervised several students from undergraduate to PhD level.

DESCRIPTION:Next Department 4 seminar will take place on Monday\, 26th February 2024 at 11:15 in room A008. \nSpeaker: Sebastian Möller\, DFKI Berlin & Quality and Usability Lab at TU Berlin  \nTitle: Recent work in Speech and Language Technology \nAbstract:\nIn this overview talk\, I would like to shed light on recent activities our teams have performed in speech and language technologies\, and in human-machine interaction in a larger sense. We start from core technologies for extracting information from text\, which we use to detect disinformation\, which we consider as a hybrid task\, and analyze how human evaluators can be supported best using machine classifiers. This requires explanations of model behavior\, which we address via textual and dialogic explainability. Dialog and its evaluation is also another topic of our research. On the speech side\, we continue with our dimension-based speech quality assessment framework\, which is also useful for disentangling speaker characteristics\, used e.g. in speaker anonymization. Finally\, I briefly summarize some work on XR interfaces\, used e.g. for conveying sign language. The models and tools we use in our research are commonly shared with the community\, both on a national and European level. \nBio:\nSebastian Möller studied electrical engineering at the universities of Bochum\, Orléans (France) and Bologna (Italy). From 1994 to 2005\, he was a research associate and later a university lecturer at the Institute for Communication Acoustics (IKA) at Ruhr University Bochum\, where he worked on speech signal transmission\, speech technology and communication acoustics\, as well as on aspects of the quality of speech-based systems. He received his PhD from Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 1999 with a thesis on the assessment and prediction of speech quality in telecommunications\, and his habilitation in 2004 with a book on the quality of telephone-based spoken dialog systems. From 2005 to 2015\, he worked at Telekom Innovation Laboratories\, an affiliated institute of Technische Universität Berlin. In April 2007\, he was appointed university professor in the field of « Quality and Usability » at TU Berlin\, working on the quality and user experience of speech-based and multimodal systems. He has contributed largely to the scientiific basis of Quality of Experience (QoE)\, and had practical impact by shaping recommendations of the International Telecommunication Union\, ITU\, on evaluation methods for different types of services. Since 2017\, he has headed the research area « Speech and Language Technology » at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence\, DFKI\, as Scientific Director. He is further Adjunct professor at the University of Technology in Sydney\, and was a member of the board of the International Speech Communication Association\, ISCA\, from 2016 to 2023. DESCRIPTION:Next D4 seminar will take place on January 24th at 2 pm in room C005. \nCaio Corro\, MCF at Sorbonne Université\, will give a talk entitled « Graph-based semantic parsing and compositional generalization ». \nAbstract:\n\nSemantic parsing aims to transform a natural language utterance into a structured representation that can be easily manipulated by a software (for example to query a database). As such\, it is a central task in human-computer interfaces. It has recently been observed that sequence-to-sequence models struggle on settings that require compositional generalization. \nIn this talk\, I will present our work on graph-based semantic parsing. We proposed two novel graph-based formulations of this problem. Both methods deliver novel state-of-art results on standard benchmarks that test for compositional generalization. Moreover\, I will explain how to build losses for learning when the alignment between concepts and words are not annotated in the data\, and briefly discuss theoretical limitation of token-separable losses that are commonly used in the literature (including the presented work).

DESCRIPTION:Le prochain séminaire D1 aura lieu le jeudi 14 décembre à 10h30 dans la salle B013. \nCharline Grenier\, doctorante au Laboratoire ICube\, présentera un exposé intitulé « Color-mapped noise vector fields for generating procedural micro-patterns ». \nAbstract\nStochastic micro-patterns successfully enhance the realism of virtual scenes. Procedural models using noise combined with transfer functions are extremely efficient to generate them. However\, most patterns employ 1D transfer functions\, which assign color\, transparency\, or other material attributes\, based on a single scalar noise. Multi-dimensional transfer functions have received widespread attention in other fields\, such as scientific volume rendering. However\, their potential has not yet been well explored for modelling micro-patterns in the field of procedural texturing. We propose a procedural model for stochastic patterns\, defined as the composition of a bi-dimensional transfer function (a.k.a. color-map) with a stochastic vector field. Our model encompasses several existing procedural noises\, such as Gaussian noise and Phasor noise\, and generates a much larger gamut of patterns\, including locally structured patterns. It can also be used to procedurally enhance virtual terrains in real-time\, for example by adding spatially varying erosion patterns. By adapting the Phasor noise to the specific characteristics of terrains (water flowing\, control on slopes) we create relief details corresponding to the underlying terrain characteristics\, that preserve the coherence of generated landforms and allow artistic control through a palette of control maps.

DESCRIPTION:Le prochain séminaire du D4 aura lieu le lundi 11 décembre à 14h dans la salle C005. \nTom Bourgeade (Université de Turin – Département d’Informatique)\, présentera un exposé intitulé « Understanding and Detecting: from Explainability in Natural Language Processing to Abusive Language Detection ». \nAbstract\nIn the rapidly evolving field of Natural Language Processing (NLP)\, where neural architectures are becoming increasingly more complex\, explainability of models is becoming essential to maintain users’ trust. At the same time\, the rise in usage of social media is making manual moderation of content increasingly difficult\, accentuating the need for automated abusive language detection systems\, based on these same architectures. This presentation will focus on two main areas of my research: first\, explainability in NLP\, in particular\, the detection of biases in datasets and the creation of understandable natural language explanations. Second\, I will present my work on abusive language detection\, through the creation and analysis of a contextualized corpus\, annotated for the presence of anti-immigrant stereotypes. I will also discuss the generalizability of these detection models\, and the importance and difficulties of taking conversational context into account.

It will take place on December 8th at 10:30 am\, in room B013.\n  \nAbstract:\nDistance Geometry (DG) is an interdisciplinary research area where pure mathematics\, computer science and several other disciplines come together\, each by playing an important role\, either proposing new applications\, or providing support to problems arising in the DG context. In this seminar\, I’ll mainly be focusing on the application arising in structural biology which asks whether the three-dimensional structure of proteins can be determined by exploiting information that is basically encoded in terms of geometrical constraints. After a short historical review about my long collaboration with Therese Malliavin and other colleagues\, I’ll make a point on the state-of-the-art in the field and briefly describe our current research directions and ongoing projects.\n\n  \n\nAbout the speaker:\nAntonio Mucherino is an associate professor at IRISA\, University of Rennes and an applied mathematician. His research is mainly focused on Discretizable Distance Geometry.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Chloé Clavel (Centre Inria de Paris\, équipe-projet ALMAnaCH) \nAbstract:\nA single lack of social tact on the part of a conversational system (chatbot\, voice assistant\, social robot) can cause the user’s trust and engagement with the interaction to drop. This lack of social intelligence affects the willingness of a large audience to view conversational systems as acceptable. To understand the state of the user\, the current affective/social computing research community has drawn on research in artificial intelligence and the social sciences. However\, in recent years\, the trend has shifted towards a monopoly of deep learning methods\, which are quite powerful but opaque and greedy for annotated data and less suitable for integrating social science knowledge. I will present here the research we are doing  to develop Machine/Deep Learning models for modeling the social component of interactions. She is an Emeritus professor at Brasilia University\, now is professor at Catholic University of Brasilia\, and Senior Research at CNPq. I have been working with human fungal pathogens\, specially the neglected tropical fungi\, for about 30 years\, coordinating projects about fungal genome\, host-pathogen interaction\, and post-genomic data aiming developing new antifungal compounds against new targets identified by comparative genomics. Trr1 (Thioredoxin Reductase) enzyme is one of those targets\, and for about 10 years now we started a collaboration with Loria (Bernard Maigret). I will talk about the timeline and development of new potential compounds with antifungal activities\, future trends and perspectives of this relevant topic\, considering the scarce arsenal and resistance for human fungal infections\, including tropical neglected diseases.

DESCRIPTION:The next department 4 seminar will take place on Tuesday\, 9th May at 2pm in room C005. \nFarah Benamara (Université Paul Sabatier – IRIT) will give a presentation entitled Stereotype detection and intention detection from texts. \nFarah Benamara (https://www.irit.fr/~Farah.Benamara/) is Associate Professor in computer science at Toulouse University Paul Sabatier since 2005. She is member of IRIT laboratory and co-head of the MELODI group (https://www.irit.fr/en/departement/dep-artificial-intelligence/melodi-team/). Her research concerns Natural Language Processing and focuses on the development of semantic and pragmatic models for language understanding with a particular attention on evaluative language processing\, discourse processing and information extraction from texts.  She published more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed international conference and journal papers. She has been designed to be area chair at ACL 2019 and EACL 2021 and co-edited a special issue on contextual phenomena in evaluative language processing in the journal of Computation Linguistics. SUMMARY:Séminaire CAPSID-ABC : "Structural Optimal Transport for Domain Adaptation with Theoritical Guarantees"
DESCRIPTION:Le prochain séminaire commun des équipes CAPSID et ABC aura lieu le 14 mars à 13h\, en salle B013. Mourad El Hamri présentera un exposé intitulé « Structural Optimal Transport for Domain Adaptation with Theoritical Guarantees« . \nRésumé :\nLa théorie du transport optimal permet non seulement de définir une distance entre les mesures de probabilité\, mais offre également un moyen géométrique de transporter un ensemble de points vers un autre selon le principe du moindre effort. Ce double aspect a laissé la porte grande ouverte pour les applications en adaptation de domaine. Toutefois\, il existe souvent dans les domaines source et cible un biais structurel sur la représentation des données ou des structures latentes qui ne sont pas prises en compte par la formulation classique du transport optimal\, et l’incapacité à incorporer pleinement ces structures peut entraver le succès de l’adaptation de domaine. Dans ce séminaire\, je montrerai plusieurs approches pour incorporer les informations structurelles au sein du transport optimal afin de résoudre efficacement le problème d’adaptation de domaine. La première approche s’appuie sur une formulation hiérarchique du transport optimal pour aligner les structures sources et cibles avec une analyse théorique qui fournit des bornes de généralisation pour trois scénarios\, à savoir\, l’adaptation de domaine non supervisé\, semi-supervisé et multi-sources. La deuxième approche permet de créer de manière progressive des structures sources augmentées via une technique de propagation de labels basée sur le transport optimal\, permettant l’apprentissage d’une suite de sous-espaces latents domaine-invariants et discriminants\, au sein desquels il devient facile d’étiqueter graduellement les données du domaine cible.

DESCRIPTION:Mardi 28 février 2023 aura lieu une journée scientifique autour de l’IA dans la Faculté des Sciences et Technologies de l’Université de Lorraine à Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy. \nCette journée est ouverte à tous et doit permettre de rassembler les étudiants\, ingénieurs et enseignants chercheurs de nos universités mais aussi le monde socio-économique de plus en plus intéressé par nos recherches menées dans le domaine de l’Intelligence Artificielle. \nLe programme abordera l’IA en santé\, le NLP en passant par les différentes applications de l’IA et ses enjeux locaux attendus par nos partenaires industriels. La participation des doctorants en IA se fera par le biais de sessions posters et de démonstrations.
