DESCRIPTION:Next Loria colloquium will take place on Tuesday\, 10th December at 1:30 pm in the Amphitheater. \nWe will have the pleasure to welcome Jean Cardinal\, professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles\, with a presentation (in English) entitled « Combinatorics\, Geometry\, and Algorithms« . \nAbstract: \nNumerous interactions exist between the fields of combinatorics\, discrete geometry — in the tradition initiated\, among others\, by Paul Erdős — and theoretical computer science. It is often fruitful to consider combinatorial abstractions to tackle computational geometry problems\, and conversely\, geometry crops up sometimes unexpectedly in a purely discrete computational context. \nWe will illustrate these interactions through an example related to our research. \nIn computational geometry\, it can be useful to encode sets of points in the plane by storing the orientation (clockwise or counterclockwise) of every triple of points. By considering the properties that these orientations must satisfy as axioms\, one can relate these encodings to tools from matroid theory. These ideas have helped to identify a specific complexity class that revealed useful for better understanding the difficulty of a number of problems in computational geometry. \nWe will strive to minimize technical content and make the presentation accessible to everyone. \nBiography: \nJean Cardinal is a professor of computer science at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB)\, in Brussels\, Belgium\, and co-director of the Algorithms Research Group. His research is in the field of theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics\, in particular computational geometry\, the branch of computer science devoted to the design and analysis of algorithms for problems involving geometric data. Heobtained his PhD from ULB in 2001\, with a fellowship from the FNRS\, and has held visiting professorships at various institutions since then\, the most recent ones being at ETH Zurich and Université Sorbonne Paris Nord. \nPeople from outside the laboratory must register by sending an email to Marie Baron: marie.baron (at) loria.fr before Friday\, 6th December.

DESCRIPTION:Next Loria colloquium will take place on Thursday\, 17 October at 1:30 pm in the Amphitheater. \nWe will have the pleasure to welcome Jean-Yves Le Boudec\, honorary professor at EPFL and fellow of the IEEE. \nHis presentation will be in English and is entitled « Time Sensitive Networks\, Network Calculus and Clock Non-idealities« . \nAbstract: Time Sensitive Networks offer guarantees on worst-case delay\, worst-case delay variation and zero congestion loss. They find applications in many areas such as factory automation\, embedded and vehicular networks\, audio-visual studio networks\, and in the front-hauls of cellular wireless networks. In this talk we will describe how network calculus can be used to analyze time sensitive networks. We will also explain why clock nonidealities matter and how to take them into account. \nBio: Jean-Yves Le Boudec is honorary professor at EPFL and fellow of the IEEE. He graduated from Ecole Normale Supérieure de Saint-Cloud\, Paris\, where he obtained the Agrégation in Mathematics with rank 4 in 1980 and received his doctorate in 1984 from the University of Rennes\, France. From 1984 to 1987 he was with INSA/IRISA\, Rennes. In 1987 he joined Bell Northern Research\, Ottawa\, Canada\, as a member of scientific staff in the Network and Product Traffic Design Department. In 1988\, he joined the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory where he was manager of the Customer Premises Network Department. He became full professor at EPFL in 1997 and honorary professor in 2023. His interests are in the performance and architecture of communication systems and smart grids. He co-authored a book on network calculus\, which serves as a foundation for deterministic networking\, an introductory textbook on Information Sciences\, and is the author of the book « Performance Evaluation ». He received numerous awards\, among which the IEEE millenium medal\, the Infocom Best Paper award\, the ACM Sigmetrics Best Paper award\, the ACM Conext Best Paper Award\, the IEEE Communication Society William R. The most useful\, important\, and safety-critical jobs will require these systems to operate both intelligently and autonomously\, with the ability to sense and respond to both nominal and off-nominal conditions. It is essential that we enable reasoning sufficient to react to dynamic environments and detect critical failures on-board\, in real time\, to enable mitigation triggering. We are challenged by the constraints of real-life embedded operation that limit the system instrumentation\, space\, timing\, power\, weight\, cost\, and other operating conditions of on-board\, runtime verification. While the research area of RV is vast\, there is a dearth of RV tools that can operate within these constraints\, and without violating rules for air and space flight certification. \nThe Realizable\, Responsive\, Unobtrusive Unit (R2U2) analyzes specifications that combine temporal logics with powerful reasoning to provide formal assurances during runtime\, enabling self-assessment of critical systems. While force feedback has traditionally played a crucial role\, this presentation explores the untapped potential of cutaneous haptics to create more natural\, richer\, and safer interactions in human-centered robotics. Dr. Pacchierotti will share his contributions to this field\, discussing the role of cutaneous and kinesthetic haptics for robotics\, presenting the design of innovative cutaneous haptic interfaces and rendering techniques\, along with their application in human-centered robotics and immersive environments. Emphasizing a holistic and multi-modal approach to haptic feedback\, this talk aims to inspire researchers and engineers to explore cutaneous haptics for developing the next generation of sensory human-robot interfaces. The presentation concludes by addressing the scientific and technological challenges in this evolving field.\n\n\n\nBiosketch:\nClaudio Pacchierotti is a tenured researcher at CNRS-IRISA in Rennes\, France\, since 2016. He was previously a postdoctoral researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology\, Genova\, Italy. Pacchierotti earned his PhD at the University of Siena in 2014. He was Visiting Researcher in the Penn Haptics Group at University of Pennsylvania in 2014\, the Dept. of Innovation in Mechanics and Management at University of Padua in 2013\, the Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine (MIRA) at University of Twente in 2014\, and the Dept. Computer\, Control and Management Engineering of the Sapienza University of Rome in 2022. Pacchierotti received the 2014 EuroHaptics Best PhD Thesis Award and the 2022 CNRS Bronze Medal. He is Senior Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Haptics\, Co-Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Telerobotics\, and Secretary of the Eurohaptics Society.

DESCRIPTION:Next Loria colloquium will take place on Wednesday\, June 7th at 1:30 pm in the Amphitheater. \nWe will have the pleasure to welcome Mário Figueiredo\, professor at the Instituto de Telecomunicações\, Instituto Superior Técnico\, Universidade de Lisboa\, for a presentation entitled Causal Discovery from Observation Data: Introduction and Some Recent Advances. \nAbstract:\nCausal discovery is an active research field that aims to uncover the underlying causal mechanisms that drive the relationship between a collection of variables and which has applications in many areas\, including medicine\, biology\, economics\, and social sciences. In principle\, identifying causal relationships requires interventions.\nHowever\, intervening is often impossible\, impractical\, or unethical\, which has stimulated much research on causal discovery from purely observational data or mixed observational-interventional data. In this talk\, after overviewing the causal discovery field\, I will discuss some recent advances\, namely on causal discovery from data with latent interventions and on what is the quintessential causal discovery problem: distinguishing the cause from the effect on a pair of dependent variables. \nBiography:\nMário Figueiredo received his PhD (1994) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico\, University of Lisbon\, where he is an IST Distinguished Professor and holder of the Feedzai\nChair on Machine Learning. He is a senior researcher and group leader at Instituto de Telecomunicações. His research areas include machine learning\, signal processing\, and optimization. He received several\nhonors and awards\, namely: Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)\, Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR)\, Fellow of the European Association for Signal Processing (EURASIP)\, W. R. G. Baker Award (IEEE)\, EURASIP Technical Achievement Award\, member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering\, member of the Lisbon Academy of Science. DESCRIPTION:Le prochain colloquium du Loria aura lieu le jeudi 2 mars à 13h30 dans l’amphithéâtre. \nNous aurons le plaisir d’accueillir Anne-Cécile Orgerie\, chercheuse CNRS à l’IRISA (Rennes). \nConsommation énergétique et impacts environnementaux des systèmes distribués. \nLes systèmes distribués\, tels que les clouds\, s’étendent de plus en plus à l’échelle mondiale\, avec des services numériques hébergés aux quatre coins du globe et appartenant souvent à des systèmes complexes\, utilisant eux-mêmes de nombreux autres services et ressources matérielles. Cette augmentation s’accompagne d’une croissance alarmante des infrastructures de cloud et de leur consommation d’énergie. Malgré la complexité des systèmes distribués\, il est important de comprendre comment ils consomment l’énergie afin de chasser les Joules gaspillées et de réduire leur impact environnemental. Cet exposé traitera de la mesure de la consommation énergétique des systèmes distribués et de la dérivation de modèles à partir de ces mesures pour évaluer leur consommation énergétique et leur impact environnemental.\n\nBiographie : Anne-Cécile Orgerie est chercheuse CNRS à l’IRISA à Rennes. Elle a obtenu son doctorat en informatique en 2011 à Lyon. Depuis 2012\, elle fait partie de l’équipe Myriads qui travaille sur les systèmes distribués large échelle\, le Cloud et le Edge computing. Ses thématiques de recherches portent sur la mesure\, la modélisation\, la simulation et la réduction de la consommation énergétique des systèmes distribués. DESCRIPTION:Next Loria Colloquium will take place on Thursday\, February 2nd at 1:30 pm in the Amphitheater. \nWe will have the pleasure to welcome David Chavalarias for a presentation entitled « L’inévitable affaissement de la démocratie sous l’effet des BigTech » \nAvec la montée en puissance des réseaux sociaux\, une lame de fond s’abat sur les démocraties : le tissu social se déchire\, les opinions sont manipulées\, les élections sont déstabilisées. Si les outils numériques ont représenté une innovation majeure dans la production et la diffusion de savoirs\, ils ont également leurs côtés obscurs : ils donnent les clés de l’influence sociale à tout acteur\, politique ou étatique\, qui souhaiterait asseoir ses idées auprès d’un grand nombre de nos concitoyens. Autour du livre Toxic Data et des résultats du projet Politoscope\, nous décortiquerons les interférences entres mécanismes cognitifs\, nouvelles technologies de machine learning et enjeux géopolitiques qui mènent à une déstabilisation systémiques de nos démocraties puis nous dégagerons des pistes de réflexion et de recherche pour y remédier. \nBio : \nDavid Chavalarias est Directeur de Recherche CNRS au CAMS (EHESS) et Directeur de l’Institut des Systèmes complexes de Paris Île-de-France. In Hybrid Intelligence\, the emphasis is on adaptive\, collaborative\, responsible\, interactive and human-centered intelligent systems\, that assist us\, leverage our strengths and compensate for human weaknesses.  This new field of study is being driven by rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, but it fundamentally necessitates collaboration and interaction with many other fields investigating human-AI interactions. In this talk\, I will present the Hybrid Intelligence\, its vision\, current developments and challenges for future directions.\n\n\nBio: Ilaria Tiddi is an Assistant Professor in Hybrid Intelligence at the Knowledge in AI (KAI) group of the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam (NL). Her research focuses on creating systems that generate complex narratives through a combination of machine learning\, semantic technologies\, open data and cognitive theories\, mostly applied in e-Science and robotics scenarios. She is Editor-in-Chief of the CEUR-WS publication series and Program Chair of the next Hybrid-Human Artificial Intelligence conference (HHAI2023). Since 2014\, she has organized a number of workshop series (Recoding Black Mirror\, Application of Semantic Web Technologies in Robotics\, Linked Data 4 Knowledge Discovery) and was OC member of the major venues in the KR field (ISWC/ESWC\, WWW\, CIKM).\n\n\n\n\nPeople from outside the laboratory must register by sending an email to marie.baron (at) loria.fr before October 31st.

Grenoble Alpes\, France) with a presentation entitled « AI-Powered Data-Driven Education » \nAbstract: Educational platforms are increasingly becoming AI-driven. Besides providing a wide range of course filtering options\, personalized recommendations of learning material and teachers are driving today’s research. While accuracy plays a major role in evaluating those recommendations\, many factors must be considered including learner retention\, throughput\, upskilling ability\, equality of learning opportunities\, and satisfaction. This creates a tension between learner-centered and platform-centered approaches. I will describe research at the intersection of data-driven recommendations and education theory. This includes multi-objective algorithms that leverage collaboration and affinity in peer learning\, studying the impact of learning strategies on platforms and people\, and automating the generation of sequences of courses. I will end the talk with a discussion of the central role data management systems could play in enabling holistic educational experiences. \n\nBio: Sihem Amer-Yahia is a Silver Medal CNRS Research Director and Deputy Director of the Lab of Informatics of Grenoble. She works on exploratory data analysis and fairness in job marketplaces. Before joining CNRS\, she was Principal Scientist at QCRI\, Senior Scientist at Yahoo! Research and Member of Technical Staff at at&t Labs. Sihem is PC chair for SIGMOD 2023 and vice president of the VLDB Endowment. She currently leads the Diversity&Inclusion initiative for the database community.\n\n

The puzzles\, played following simple rules on square-tiled surfaces\, have natural configuration graphs with a geometry of their own. These graphs are not completely unlike other combinatorial graphs used in the study of moduli spaces of surfaces and which can be visualized in similar ways. The goal will be to play around with the puzzles\, explore their graphs and have fun. \nThe Quadratis puzzles were created and brought to life with Paul Turner\, Mario Gutiérrez and Reyna Juárez. \nBio: Hugo Parlier is a mathematician from the University of Luxembourg interested in low dimensional geometry and topology. Many of his results are related to the study of curves on surfaces and often have a combinatorial and visual flavor. In addition\, he is passionate about sharing its ever evolving nature with as wide an audience possible. DESCRIPTION:Next Colloquium Loria will take place on Thursday\, 24 February on Teams. \nWe are honored to welcome Serena Villata\, Tenured researcher at CNRS at I3S\, with a presentation entitled « Towards assessing natural language argument quality: results and open challenges ». \nAbstract: \nArgumentation is the process by which arguments are constructed and handled. Thus argumentation means that arguments are compared\, evaluated in some respect and judged in order to establish whether any of them are warranted. The field of artificial argumentation is emerging as an important aspect of Artificial Intelligence research\, in particular dealing with the automatic identification of argument structures in text. In this talk\, I will focus on the issue of automatically assessing the quality of these identified natural language arguments. I will investigate the role of machine learning and reasoning methods to tackle this issue\, focusing on the real world scenarios of political debates (with the assessment of fallacious arguments) and persuasive essays (for the scoring of students’ assays). \n  \nBiography: \nI am a tenured research fellow (CR1) in computer science at the CNRS and I pursue my research at the I3S laboratory where I am a member of the joint Inria-CNRS-UCA Wimmics team. \nMy research area is Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, and my current work focuses on computational argumentation considering both reasoning on computational models of argument and mining natural arguments from text (argument mining). I am particularly interested in multidisciplinary applications of argumentation to the legal domain\, to medical texts\, to political debates and to social networks. \nSince July 2019\, I have been awarded with a Chair in Artificial Intelligence at the Interdisciplinary Institute for Artificial Intelligence 3IA Côte d’Azur on “Artificial Argumentation for Humans”. Since January 2021\, I am the Deputy Scientific Director of the 3IA Côte d’Azur Institute. \nSince December 2019\, I am a member of the National Pilot Committee for Digital Ethics(CNPEN)\, and since October 2020 I am a member of the Scientific and Ethical Committee of the Cancer Data Platform of the Institut National du Cancer. \nI am part of the Steering Committee of COMMA (Computational Models of Arguments)\, JURIX (Foundation for Legal Knowledge Based Systems) and ECA (European Conference on Argumentation). Since September 2021\, I am a member of the IAAIL executive committee(2022-2023).

DESCRIPTION:Next Colloquium Loria will take place on Thursday\, 28 October at 1:30 pm in the Amphitheater. \nWe are delighted to welcome Jaco van de Pol\, Professor of Computer Science in Aarhus University\, with a talk entitled « Explainable Verification of Safety and Security of Software Systems ». \nVerification of safety-critical (software) systems is essential\,\nbut requires automation to be applied full scale. The first half\nof the presentation will mention contributions that pushed the\nscalability of verification\, in particular symbolic and parallel\nalgorithms that are applied in model checkers.\n \nHowever\, fully automated verification poses new challenges.\nCertification: why can we trust the yes/no answer of a complicated\ntool like an automated model checker? Explainability: which result\nhas actually been demonstrated\, and under what assumptions?\n \nFinally\, I will introduce the notion of certified model checking\,\nand illustrate it on a concrete approach for verification based\non timed automata.

DESCRIPTION:Mathieu d’Aquin\, Professor of Informatics specialised in data analytics and semantic technologies at the Data Science Institute and the Insight Centre for Data Analytics of the National University of Ireland Galway\, is the next speaker for Loria’s colloquium. \nThe colloquium will take place on Teams on Thursday\, April 1st at 1pm\, with a presentation entitled « Data and knowledge as commodities ». \nAbstract: While data has become increasingly available in the last few years\, those data and the models used to analyse them are becoming less and less interpretable. In other words\, the challenge of turning such vast amounts of data into exploitable knowledge is still present. In this presentation\, I aim to describe ongoing efforts to address this challenge by combining current data mining and machine learning techniques with traditional\, symbolic methods for artificial intelligence based on explicit knowledge representations and inferences. In particular\, taking examples from projects in education\, smart cities and the digital humanities\, I show how the legacy of the semantic web\, especially web-scale knowledge graphs and ontologies\, can support intelligent methods for data understanding and the interpretability of machine learning models.

DESCRIPTION:Titre : « Active Network Management for Distribution Networks » \nRésumé :\nDans cet exposé\, Damien Ernst décrira les défis de l’intégration des énergies renouvelables et de la gestion de la demande (deux composantes clés des micro-réseaux) dans les réseaux de distribution. Il nous expliquera pourquoi il est nécessaire de redéfinir les différentes étapes de la chaîne de décision pour la gestion de ces réseaux. Cette chaîne décisionnelle (informatique) se compose de quatre éléments : le choix du modèle d’interaction entre les différents acteurs du système électrique\, les décisions d’investissement\, la planification opérationnelle et le contrôle en temps réel. He will argue that an integrated approach for redisigning the different steps of the decision chain for managing distribution network is needed. This decision chain is made of four elements: choice of the interaction model between the different actors of the electrical system\, investment decisions\, operational planning and real-time control.
